Whether you are a homeowner or a tenant, it can be a bit of a chore making sure your home is pest free. No one wants to turn on a light in their house to find a lizard looking at them. This is a common occurrence for many people in the southern and southwestern states. There are several species of lizards like geckos in the United States, many native and non-native. Florida is home to over 20 different species alone.
Lizards prefer warm and dark places where they can find food and your home might be the perfect place for them to obtain it. Getting a professional to come in can be costly and might be a waiting game. There are numerous easy and effective lizard control that you can do that will get rid of lizards for little to no cost.
There are many ingredients around the home that you can try that will work as an effective lizard repellent, such as coffee powder, Tabasco sauce, black pepper, eggs shells, garlic, ice cold water and many other food sources you can try. You can create your own chemical-free pesticide as lizard control with household ingredients to ward off unwanted geckos and other lizards. Fill a spray bottle with water and then add a couple of teaspoons of red and black pepper powder to the water and mix it thoroughly. For added benefit, you may want to add chili powder. Lizards find the smell of the pepper spray to be irritating, so they will not come to your house. Spray the mixture where you have encountered lizards in your home, like under kitchen racks, behind furniture, under the stove, and window sills. Spray any of the entrances that the lizards are using to enter your home.
Like the spicy smell of pepper spray, lizards do not like the strong smell of garlic. You can place whole garlic or just garlic cloves by places you have seen lizards in your home. Make sure to get their entry points, the windows, doors, and dark areas in your home. Like the pepper spray, you can make a garlic spray if you do not want garlic hanging around your house. In a spray bottle, combine store-bought garlic juice (or the juice from crushing the garlic cloves yourself) with water. Spray all the areas a few times a day.
Naphthalene balls, commonly known as “moth balls,” are typically used to repel other pests and insects, but they work on lizards as well! The lizards cannot stand the pungent smell and will go elsewhere. Place them anywhere you have spotted them, especially in cupboards and any other dark places they like to hide. Get their entry points around the house as well and enjoy a lizard-free home.
If you prefer a more hands-on approach to getting rid of lizards, try the cold-water method. Lizards are cold-blooded, like most reptiles are, which means that their internal temperature is determined by how warm or cold their environment is. If you splash cold water onto a lizard, the sudden drop in temperature will shock their system and temporarily immobilize them and this will allow you to pick them up and transport them elsewhere.
Get Rid of Their Food Supply
Lizards eat insects. Therefore, they are attracted to areas where there are breeding grounds. If there is no food supply, the lizards will go somewhere else to try and find food. To reduce the insect population around your home, get rid of any standing water on your property as standing water attracts insects. Make sure that trash is not left out for long and that you take it out frequently. Clean up any crumbs immediately after eating and put away leftover food right away. It is also a good idea to not leave pet food out for too long and to stick to a feeding schedule with your pets, rather than leaving food out all day in a bowl because it attracts insects.
Seal Their Entry Points
Lizards can be sneaky little creatures and find ways into your home that you may not have thought about. They can get in through cracks in your water pipes in the bathroom or kitchen, so make sure your pipes are in good condition and fix any issues you may find. Seal any cracks or small holes in walls with the use of low-cost sealants. Protect your windows by making sure the screens do not have any holes in them or by switching to metal screens. If you have a screen door, make sure it is always latched so that lizards cannot get in. It will also be a good idea to switch to metal screens for your screen door if it is not already.
This method might sound a bit silly, but many people swear by it. Lizards are prey to predatory birds and know it. Due to the large design of the peacock feather, lizards will believe they are in danger and run away. Hang the feathers around windows and doors and even near your trash bins.
Several stores sell electronic repellents for lizards that are low cost. These devices emit ultrasonic frequencies that are unbearable to lizards. Some electric repellents will also send vibrations through the walls. These devices are safe around your pets and children.
Fly paper, or any sort of glue trap, will be effective in trapping a house lizard. Place the trap where you know the lizards frequent. When the walk over the trap, they will become stuck and unable to move forward. This is the perfect opportunity to remove the lizard from your home without harming them and will also be effective in trapping the insects they consume and in reducing their food supply.
Keep Your House Spotless
Regularly vacuum, sweep and mop your floor to keep it clean. Make sure that you clean your kitchen frequently and try not to let dirty dishes pile up in the sink as that can attract insects. It is also a good idea to move your furniture around from time-to-time to expose lizard hiding areas. Keep your house light and cool, because lizards prefer dark and warm spaces. The idea is to make your house as unappealing to the lizards as possible by eliminating their food sources, hiding spaces, and making the environment not suitable for them.
